We encourage interdisciplinary approaches and collaborations, and are open to various methodologies — qualitative, quantitative, ethnographic, historical, mixed, etc. We also hope to include studies with a range of geographical diversity, speaking to the existence and significance of forms of environmental literature, art, and popular culture that have sometimes been overlooked by Anglophone ecocriticism.

We intend for this book to establish the direction of this field of study for other scholars to follow. For this call, we are primarily looking for abstracts that describe potential case studies.

Abstracts should be accompanied by academic CVs. Notification of acceptance will be given by the end of September. Completed essays written in English will be expected by June 30, Call for Papers. European Journal of Cultural and Political Sociology. This is not a new cultural dilemma. Morton suggests that the nineteenth century witnessed an increasingly fearful perception of its own hyperobjects — geological time, evolution, the conservation or dissolution of energy.

Hyperobjects such as mass extinction, climate or atmospheric change, and pollution, have been captured by statistics, graphs or tables or, where the data is particularly vast, by methods of computer-generated visualisation. Moreover, the very tools by which we measure computers, processors, software packages can often themselves be symptomatic of the crisis — whether in emphasising our reliance on capital and technology or in highlighting traits of attempted mastery or human control. In this context of exploring the possibilities and problems in how we manage, visualise and communicate complex environmental information, we invite full essays designed to address the ways in which particular kinds of texts clarify and concretise abstract information on issues ranging from climate change to species extinction.

We ask, therefore, that all papers address the question of how big data can be channelled — within the complex crosscurrents of culture, science and political power — to communicate urgent environmental imperatives in effective and potentially transformative ways. The journal publishes work that considers cultural phenomena in relation to political context, political phenomena within a cultural framework, and points in between.

Is it love? Is it some survival instinct shared with those who are threatened? Is it some unexplainable empathy? How can we define the notion of animal love? Could those gestures of apparent tenderness, compassion or empathy of the animal world, be qualified as love, could they be linked with love or are they instinctive rescuing gestures made by whatever species to prolong the animal presence on the Earth? Is the relationship between the traveller and the animal as a vehicle a practical one or is there an affective link? The core of the subject concerns communication between species: does love make communication between species easier? While this first event successfully brought together many academics and writers from various backgrounds, countries and disciplinary fields, it appeared that the call for papers attracted studies mostly concerned with dwellings of enchantment outside of cities.

For, as opposed to what modernity has often wrongly entailed, nature does not evolve solely starting on the outskirts of our urban dwellings, but has instead become an integral part of the daily lives of a majority of humans, living in densely populated areas. As over half of humanity now resides in urban places——a tendency that has been predicted to keep growing on the increase——, nonhuman life forms have simultaneously been coevolving with us in environments that can no longer be conceived of as antagonistic to the notion of nature.

In more or less visible ways, vegetal, animal, elemental, and microbial agencies have followed the roads we have paved, adapting to and, in turn, shaping our shared urban habitats, sometimes even encroaching upon the more intimate dwelling places of our bodies. If so-called moderns seek shelter in the notion of a civilized dwelling place keeping wilderness at bay, such an anthropocentric vision remains blind to the hardly controllable coexistence of myriad life forms within our gridded, sometimes walled or gated, shared, urban and suburban pluriverses. Suffice it to mention the pullulating of coyotes in North American suburbs, of spotted hyenas in Ethiopian cities, of foxes in all European metropoles, of raccoons in Parisian forests, of parakeets vividly coloring the sky in Brussels, of Geckos nesting on the walls of our homes in Spain and India——or in Perpignan for that matter——and the less glamorous domestic intrusions of cockroaches, ants, or other insects in our urban ecosystems to heal from the delusional idea of a dichotomy separating humans and cities from nonhumans and natural environments.

Moreover, while some of these feral animals tend to first be considered as a pestilence or jeopardy, in many cases local communities have been finding ways to reconsider the potential intra-actions between various populations — whether they be part of the vegetal, animal or human worlds — in ways forcing humans to adapt to nonhuman agencies, and reciprocally.

As for plants, the wild proliferation of weeds, the cultivation of city parks, balconies, greenways, gardens etc. If the organizers themselves mostly specialize in ecocriticism and ecopoetics, we would like to encourage transdisciplinary dialogues, and therefore invite academics and artists across a wide range of disciplines to come together and advance current research and thinking on the hidden wonders of urban ecosystems urban planning, biology, anthropology, ecology, botany, geography, sociology, entomology and ornithology, history, philosophy, visual arts, and academics of the inherently transdisciplinary fields of ecocriticism, ecopoetics, zoopoetics, ecopsychology.

Additional information and coplete application materials are available on the TASI website:. Call for papers: Energy, Ecology, and the Culture of Cities. November , Keynote Lecture: Ursula K. Heise UCLA. Contemporary theories of uneven development continue this line of thought. The greater the city, the greater its hunger for energy and labor, and the larger its ecological footprint. But if a city is the visible expression of the energy system which made it possible, it can never be just the opposite of the countryside.

Rather, their relationship resembles that between the sporocarp and the mycelium of a fungus: far-flung, barely visible filaments gather nutrients which the fruitbody assembles into a tangible shape — and eventually disperses in the form of spores. What does the city give back? The obvious answer would be: culture. They are the places where high priests, novelists, stock-brokers, and other folk specialized in the manipulation of symbol systems reside.

They are the sites of royal courts, museums, libraries, or centers of scholarship. Seen from the standpoint of energy and ecology, however, the culture of cities cannot be understood merely as a matter of elite culture. James C. These flows constitute the geography of daily life — sites of vitality and decay, suburban gardens, inner city slums, but also metropolitan parks, empty lots, lakes, and water courses.

They shape and are shaped by where people shop for their groceries, which species they gather in their gardens and refrigerators, how much noise and pollution they are able to put up with, how far they are willing to commute in order to escape from these things. It is in the weaving of these patterns that different socio-ecological positions — of class, race, and gender, but also of pets, pests, and food products — take embodied form.

Finally, the culture of cities has to do with the ways in which urban life is imagined, and the meanings attributed to the welter of experiences it affords — meanings articulated in poetry and prose, visual art, music, and film. For this symposium, we invite papers that examine cultural expressions of urban life in terms of their energetic and ecological implications.

This international conference aims to examine cultural diversity and prolixity in twenty-first century Scotland, as well as its changed relations to the UK and Europe in the wake of the Brexit referendum. If writers in the s placed Scotland on the map, the new millennium ushered in a variety of works of fiction that contributed to the expansion of that map and to an integration of notions that shift the focus from the national to that of an examination of Scotland in a context that foregrounds the post-national and the cosmopolitan.

Bell, starting from the theoretical thinking of Richard Kearney, contends that a European identity is developing because of the way power is restructured at a European level, with the emergence of countries as super-nation-states, which are gradually prevailing over nation states. Berthold Schoene resorts to the concept of cosmopolitanism to describe this shift in recent Scottish literature:. Schoene This concept of a post-national identity, and therefore of a — possibly problematic — post-national literature raises the issue of the interconnections of art, ideology and politics, which are precisely the crossroads the Scottish novel is standing at.

Interrogating artistic borders, they interrogate the national idea. Please send a word abstract for a minute presentation with a short biography to the three convenors Marie-Odile Pittin-Hedon marie-odile. Bell, Eleanor, and Gavin Miller eds. Gifford, Douglas. Colloque international. From animal traces in wild nature to the furrows drawn by the plough in cultivated fields, the land proposes a writing to be deciphered and lets its voice be heard through innumerable human and non human voices. Thoreau speaks about agricultural lands as a palimpsest where all peasants have written their lives through agricultural gestures, replacing parchment by the land.

Poets, like Seamus Heaney in Ireland or Niyi Osundare in Nigeria, see their pens as agricultural tools, and others like John Clare, sing the rural world. Native American myths have often made agriculture an element in Creation stories. In Japan, some peasants transformed ricefields into pictorial works of art. Agronomists and travellers like Arthur Young in the 18 th century, observed agricultural techniques in the countries they visited and reported about them in their travel books.

How did men make the land the page of a story that artists could read and that farmers go on telling through their gestures? Can nature writing suggest another way of reading the world? Ecocriticism will be a crucial point in the field. The land also writes about the oppression or freedom of peoples through the distribution of territories and the migrations from one territory to another.

The history of indigenous peoples and also the more recent migrations due to wars can be discussed as well as the notion of reconstruction and the return to freedom through literature and arts, or through the defence of a language. We can also evoke the role of the non human in the relationship between the land and freedom the travels of seeds and plants, of animals placed in zoos, after voyages of discovery appearing as a sign of colonization and a will of preservation at the same time.

We can study the place of the First Nations and the notion of belonging, the role of writing and of all forms of representation in the protection of human beings and of the natural world. The relationship between writing and ecology or writing and natural sciences can be revisited. Various geographical areas will be considered Africa, Australia, Canada, the Caribbean Islands, Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, etc…, which does not exclude the relationships, correspondences, parallelisms or contrasts between Anglophone and non Anglophone countries.

Literature may be considered as a fight and a peaceful weapon of reconstruction serving the defence of the earth as a planet, of stolen territories, of wounded lands and the peoples dwelling on them. One can think about contemporary nature writers, but also about romantic poetry as a defence of the earth.

Another angle of vision might be the land changed into a landscape, into a place of writing, of poetry or painting, or else the land as the place of a chant and of words orality and literature with First Nations and indigenous peoples. An important question will concern the speech of the land and the voices of the earth: can we speak about orality as far as the human world is concerned? Can we speak about animal speech and animal writing traces and constructions : these questions will allow us to enrich the reflexion on the relationship between the human and the non human.

Is there such a thing as a liberty of the non-human earth, from the moment when the human being intervenes and engraves his own speech on it? The conference will be multidisciplinary and submissions by historians, geographers, literary critics, agronomists, chemists, mathematicians, anthropologists, ethnologists, archeologists, physicists, astrophysicians biologists, and poets among others, will be welcome.

Here are some suggestions:. Healing earth the role of plants and of the non human world in healing techniques, healing nature, etc…. Wild traces and cultivated traces: the animal world as the memory of the earth archeology, zoology, bio-diversity, traces of animal movements, ploughing, pastoralism, etc…. The wrack zone, as well, is where the detritus of global traffic ends up and takes on ambivalent forms, and represents a philosophically and aesthetically generative space.

Behind all of our thinking about this conference theme is the idea of something like transformative resilience amid the ruins of capitalism. After all, sustainability of the current system cannot be desirable for or desired by those who wish to build more equitable global human and ecological relations: hence, wrack and transformation.

We have elected not to provide the traditional list of diverse areas of interest related to the theme. Instead, although we welcome individual submissions, we encourage potential attendees to seek connections with each other both before you submit proposals and after the final schedule is released. It is our preference that as many presentations as possible will speak to each other, so that it becomes both an interdisciplinary and a collaborative event focused on collective learning. Although past ALECC conferences have tended to emphasize literary and cultural questions, we are actively seeking presentations from multiple disciplines and discourses.

Our local organizing committee contains representatives from Geography, Law, Writing, and Environmental Studies, along with English. This conference seeks to examine how seas and oceans have shaped and reshaped cultural identities, spurred stories of reunion and separation and redefined entire nations. In the history of human migration, entire communities have crossed seas and oceans, voluntarily or not, to settle in foreign lands and undergo identity, cultural and literary transformations.

Deleuze and Guattari once wrote that, even though the sea has often been considered a smooth space, it is nevertheless a space that humans attempt to striate, transform and submit to the land. As a result, seas and oceans have always been at the heart of political narratives of exploration, cartography , international maritime law , identity insularity and literary issues survival narratives, fishing stories.

The oceans crossed are an intermediary space where travelers and migrants alike find themselves in a liminal space, always between a departure and an arrival. As a passageway, the harbor is a liminal space where travelers and migrants lie in wait. It is also the contact zone between the continent and its hinterland on the one hand, and the oceans and the distant horizon that it suggests on the other. The port or the harbor is a chronotope of encounter, a passageway where routes, paths and itineraries intersect and mingle Bakhtin, The port is that place of heterogeneity and linguistic plurality where travelers and migrants would never have met, had they been in any other place.

Islands are often seen as different spaces, spaces that are on the margins of standardized national narratives. What may easily pass on the continent finds obstacles with the island where regional cultures conflict with national discourses. It is needless to say that seas and oceans are at the heart of various environmental concerns. Our modern world is depicted as a transitional world between an age of thoughtless exploitation fish stock depletion, offshore drilling, pollution, etc.

Ecocriticism, for instance, stems from this problematic relationship that humans have with their own environment oceans, natural environment, animals, etc. We encourage proposals from scholars in all disciplines: History, Literature, Environment Studies, Images, etc.

Call For Papers :. The environment as an agent in health has long been an issue in American cinema and literature. Contemporary U. We invite papers that address EPI or environmental issues in illness narratives both in American cinema and literature—autobiography and fiction. The space we inhabit is a lived space inscribed with the cultural traces of a collective imaginary itself informed by the art of landscape painting and writing.

Wastelands to Wonderlands see Christina Hardyment, Writing Britain: Wastelands to Wonderlands , London: The British Library, , although at the same time Iain Sinclair lamented the depletion of that same collective imaginary at the hands of urban speculators. One may choose to turn to turn-of-the-century morphing visions of landscape as it was harnessed to nascent metroland modernity, or to the lasting pastoral model as explored and deflated both by Virginia Woolf in Between the Acts and Evelyn Waugh in Brideshead Revisited Intermedial treatments of landscape and cityscape are also crucial to the understanding of the fashioning of indentity in relation to site-specificity.

The conference will also be the occasion to explore the epistemological distinctions between landscape and nature-writing and between landscape and nature-studies or Green studies as defined by Jonathan Bate or Lawrence Buell. We thus welcome papers on a broad range of topics and issues. Proposals will be examined by a scientific committee. The Two Canaries Conference marks the 20th anniversary of the Kyoto Protocol, the pioneering international treaty on greenhouse gas emissions to which, in December , nations put their signatures.

The climate is warming, frigid zones melting, seas rising. Yet to date only 75 nations have extended their commitment to the Kyoto Protocol by ratifying the Doha Amendment There are two kinds of canary in the climate system, sounding advance warnings of climate change — melting Polar Regions and shrinking islands. Both locales also have provided focal landscapes for sublime and gothic modes of apprehension.

Now these images are giving way to more fluid associations, attenuating the conceptual distance between them and the rest of the world, clearly instating the importance of both in the global scheme of things. Isolationist discourses are a luxury we can no longer afford. What can literature and literary study offer? This conference aims to explore the intricate connections between language, literature and ecology that both islands and Polar Regions uniquely generate and evoke. The following list of focal themes is a guide only and is in no way meant to be restrictive. Please submit abstracts of words, and a word bio note, to Dr Melinda Graefe melinda.

This panel takes W. The Environmental Humanities depart from the understanding that the environmental problems are not merely confined to the geological and biological spheres of the planet, but are also at their core, social and cultural problems, directly related to political and economic agendas. Therefore, the environmental crisis is critically understood and retold according to a more complete and complex vision of the contemporary world much like a vast net relating the geological, biological, historical, cultural and ethical dimensions.

Accordingly, the Environmental Humanities promote the reconfiguration of the relations between human and non-human ecologies, by questioning the concepts of human, natural, artificial, materiality and agency, articulating several languages and methodologies from the natural and social sciences, the humanities and the arts. Bearing in mind this theoretical framework, this panel invites all those who, from different disciplines, want to critically discuss islands as both geographic and mythic places within the context of environmental crisis.

We challenge students and researchers from the humanities and the social and natural sciences; writers, artists and activists to critically think the natural and artificial binomial and the manner in which it articulates with the idea of island s. What are the environmental problems of islands and the solutions found for them? What is the function of islands in the environmental imagination? In what ways can the Environmental Humanities promote, as Hayward points out, new narratives on sustainability of islands?

What examples of methodologies and perspectives from the Environmental Humanities can lead to ethical, political and artistic practices that cultivate change, empathy and inclusion, and foster more sustainable island societies? The panel welcomes different types of proposals and presentation formats about the following topics and others:. The Cambridge Introduction to Literature and Environment.

Growing interest for research concerning the connections between literature and geography has been spurred over the last few years in a spatial turn that might consistently follow the linguistic turn. This paradigm seems all the more suitable to the field of English studies since the very study of texts written in a different language necessarily leads us to wonder where they originated from.

Furthermore, recent yet widespread development of English-language literatures around the world in the 20 th and 21 st centuries imparts increased relevance to space-related inquiries in literary research. In an attempt to think the relation between place and literary and artistic creation, it is impossible to disregard modes of representation and to avoid reflecting on the ways texts convey space, be it thanks to description, to the narration of personal experience towards space, or through the invention of imaginary lands.

Likewise, more political and sociological perspectives should not be overlooked, since they aim at considering works as steeped into a literary field built out of stylistic innovations and power relationships.

In other words, literature may have the ability to create and redefine maps and places, but it may also be better understood by taking a closer look at places of creation in their materiality. By bringing together scholars working on English-language literatures and arts in their broadest sense, this conference seeks to examine the merit and richness of the spatial paradigm.

The variety of speakers and interventions would shed new light on the relevance of the spatial model by relocating what is at the heart of English studies, namely a language historically related to the British Isles, as well as by assessing the impressive plurality of fields of studies that have recently emerged, while English is now spoken and written in over seventy countries around the world. Intermedial treatments of landscape and cityscape are also crucial to the understanding of the fashioning of identity in relation to site-specificity. Ce questionnement peut prendre plusieurs orientations. Ponge, Michaux, Calvino….

The panel would like to explore how body movements moving together and moving like can affect the perception and the process of knowing animals and their mind. The question might be addressed with captive, free, domesticated or trained animals, from a scientific or an artistic point of view. In a Gibsonian perspective, the result of perception is not a percept but the transformation of the perceiver.

What happens when people create with animals a shared structure of action which consist of kinetic structures, i. What kind of self emerges from these interactions and how does it change the way of perceiving the animals and their mind? Does the imitation of animal movements promote empathy or make the perception more acute? Lathrop, Dorothy P. Muir, Jessie; by Fleuron, Svend - released Nicoll, Rev.
