Dec 13, Elaine rated it really liked it Recommends it for: anyone who likes verbal puzzles.
It is almost impossible to rate this book because there is nothing to compare it with that I know of. It is sui generis. It is not really for a read. Rather, it is intended for a group of people to read and then hash over ideas. It is a series of vignettes of people placed in difficult to impossible situations.
Then, after the situation is described, the reader is instructed "Start solving" Now this is not a textbook on creative thinking either. A textbook with the aim of teaching you how to sol It is almost impossible to rate this book because there is nothing to compare it with that I know of. A textbook with the aim of teaching you how to solve a problem would provide more data in each case study and also discuss ways to attack a problem, weigh data, and apply logical reasoning. This book does none of that, either. Rather, it is intended to stimulate conversation.
It would make a good game at a party, where selected vignettes were read aloud and attendees would have to solve what to do. I could also see this as a good book for a writing class, asking students to complete the stories. I took off one star because in some vignettes, like the first, the reader simply isn't given enough information to proceed intelligently. One has to know more about what the scientist found that is so dangerous before one can help solve his dilemma.
I gave it four stars for originality, a book intended as a group read rather than a solo read, although I guess some people would just enjoy pondering possible solutions on their own. However, discussion would evoke far more ideas. Jan 03, Crystal Hutchinson rated it really liked it Shelves: This book is a great opportunity to work with a teen program on thinking quickly.
I thought of several book talks or teen reading programs that's the librarian in me where I used this book to engage students in thinking quickly about tense, crazy situations, and how to best get out of a bad situation. I'm glad I received this e-book. I intend to reread it for future activities. Aug 10, Christina Pfeiffer rated it it was amazing. Each story had it's own little twist that the reader was forced to question themselves with.
With every situation, one will find out more about themselves which is inspiring and a a touch unnerving. From a secret bunker underneath the White House, officials watch for incoming planes on radar. Aboard the small number of unarmed fighter jets in the air, pilots make a pact to fly into a hijacked airliner if necessary to bring it down. In the skies above Pennsylvania, civilians aboard United Flight 93 make the ultimate sacrifice in their place.
Then, as the day moves forward and flights are grounded nationwide, Air Force One circles the country alone, its passengers isolated and afraid. The result is a unique, profound, and searing exploration of humanity on a day that changed the course of history, and all of our lives. The Ten Thousand Doors of January. Alix E. In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artifacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored, and utterly out of place.
Then she finds a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds, and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure and danger. Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own. Lush and richly imagined, a tale of impossible journeys, unforgettable love, and the enduring power of stories awaits in Alix E.
Harrow's spellbinding debut--step inside and discover its magic. A Single Thread: A Novel. Tracy Chevalier. Yet Violet cannot reconcile herself to a life spent caring for her grieving, embittered mother. After countless meals of boiled eggs and dry toast, she saves enough to move out of her mother's place and into the town of Winchester, home to one of England's grandest cathedrals.
There, Violet is drawn into a society of broderers--women who embroider kneelers for the Cathedral, carrying on a centuries-long tradition of bringing comfort to worshippers. Violet finds support and community in the group, fulfillment in the work they create, and even a growing friendship with the vivacious Gilda. But when forces threaten her new independence and another war appears on the horizon, Violet must fight to put down roots in a place where women aren't expected to grow.
Told in Chevalier's glorious prose, A Single Thread is a timeless story of friendship, love, and a woman crafting her own life. Strangers She Knows. I have three deadly problems: 1. I just had a bullet removed from my brain.

On May 17, , Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. How exactly has one good deed landed me in the penalty box? What's next for Offred? The Handmaid's Tale sequel.
Margaret Atwood. More than fifteen years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results.
Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third voice: a woman who wields power through the ruthless accumulation and deployment of secrets. As Atwood unfolds The Testaments, she opens up the innermost workings of Gilead as each woman is forced to come to terms with who she is, and how far she will go for what she believes.
The Handmaid's Tale. Set in the near future, it describes life in what was once the United States and is now called the Republic of Gilead, a monotheocracy that has reacted to social unrest and a sharply declining birthrate by reverting to, and going beyond, the repressive intolerance of the original Puritans. The regime takes the Book of Genesis absolutely at its word, with bizarre consequences for the women and men in its population.
The story is told through the eyes of Offred, one of the unfortunate Handmaids under the new social order. It is at once scathing satire, dire warning, and a tour de force. It is Margaret Atwood at her best. The Year of the Flood. In this second book of the MaddAddam trilogy, the long-feared waterless flood has occurred, altering Earth as we know it and obliterating most human life.
Among the survivors are Ren, a young trapeze dancer locked inside the high-end sex club Scales and Tails, and Toby, who is barricaded inside a luxurious spa. Amid shadowy, corrupt ruling powers and new, gene-spliced life forms, Ren and Toby will have to decide on their next move, but they can't stay locked away. Toby is part of a small band of survivors, along with the Children of Crake: the gentle, bioengineered quasi-human species who will inherit this new earth.
Blending action, humor, romance, and an imagination at once dazzlingly inventive and grounded in a recognizable world, MaddAddam is vintage Atwood—a moving and dramatic conclusion to her epic work of speculative fiction. Or that was the plan. Instead, after an act of unforeseen treachery, Felix is living in exile in a backwoods hovel, haunted by memories of his beloved lost daughter, Miranda. And also brewing revenge, which, after twelve years, arrives in the shape of a theatre course at a nearby prison. The Tent. In these pieces, Margaret Atwood gives a sly pep talk to the ambitious young; writes about the disconcerting experience of looking at old photos of ourselves; and examines the boons and banes of orphanhood.
Part detective novel, part psychological thriller, Surfacing is the story of a talented woman artist who goes in search of her missing father on a remote island in northern Quebec. Setting out with her lover and another young couple, she soon finds herself captivated by the isolated setting, where a marriage begins to fall apart, violence and death lurk just beneath the surface, and sex becomes a catalyst for conflict and dangerous choices. Surfacing is a work permeated with an aura of suspense, complex with layered meanings, and written in brilliant, diamond-sharp prose.
Here is a rich mine of ideas from an extraordinary writer about contemporary life and nature, families and marriage, and about women fragmented Wilderness Tips. In a few brief pages we watch as characters progress from the vulnerabilities of adolescence through the passions of youth into the precarious complexities of middle age. By superimposing the past on the present, Atwood paints interior landscapes shaped by time, regret, and life's lost chances, endowing even the banal with a sense of mystery. The Blind Assassin: A Novel. The novel begins with the mysterious death—a possible suicide—of a young woman named Laura Chase in These richly layered stories-within-stories gradually illuminate the secrets that have long haunted the Chase family, coming together in a brilliant and astonishing final twist.
